EARLY PALO DURO CANYON DRAWINGS
After retirement David spent many days out exploring Palo Duro State Park, just south of Canyon, TX. He was drawn to and fascinated by the infinite forms and colors he saw in that natural surrounding. His first early attempts to capture that splendor were in colored pencil drawings. Here are some of those early pieces.

PALO DURO LEATHER COLLAGES
Returning to his trademark medium Dad found the patterns and colors of the Canyon lent themselves perfectly to his trademark leather collage.

CIRCUS SERIES
Using simple geometric shapes and his imagination, David peopled this art series with all the drama and excitement of an old world circus. These ingenious and lighthearted pieces went fast and I was lucky enough to have been given this one by my father after I remarked how much I liked it.

CERAMICS PORTRAITS SERIES

Weed Pot

In a strange case of Art imitating art, Prof. Cale began drawing portraits of his signature "Weed Vases" in 1996. These deconstructed flower vases are meant to hold dried weeds and grasses often collected from the Palo Duro Canyon area.

BOTANICALS SERIES
One of the most popular and most prolific of David's series, these went through many iterations; simple drawings, drawings with geometric backgrounds, and later on homemade Hawaiian bark paper.

A self taught cook, (and a good one) David often found himself with a kitchen filled with a variety of bones. Finding beauty in everything, he began sketching out some of them. As he progressed the bones began to morph into a variety of forms, some phallic, some silly and some downright strange.

VOODOO ALTAR SERIES
Using colored pencils and paint David created these altars on homemade paper.
He noticed art wherever he went and these remind me of the small Mexican bark paintings we saw on a family trip to Juarez. I must wonder if this wasn't in the back of his head when he created these.
